Civil War History Hike

Join us to learn about the Union troops who camped on the state hospital grounds in the final days of the war, Raleigh's earthworks that cut through the property, and the impacts of the Civil War on the hospital and patients. This 2-hour outdoor hike will be led by City of Raleigh Museum Director, Ernest Dollar.

Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Location: Meet at the Chapel at Dix Park, 1030 Richardson Drive Raleigh, NC 27603

Tickets: Participation is limited to meet the current outdoor gathering limits. Registration is required. Registration opens one week in advance at 12:00 pm.

Due to COVID-19, Walking Tours will look a bit different. New health and safety precautions have been put in place to ensure your safety and the safety of our guides and park staff. All COVID-19 related information is listed on the Eventbrite registration page.

Know Before You Go

  • Walking up hills, in grass and on uneven surfaces will be necessary.
  • Participants will be required to wear a masks at all times.
  • Port-a-johns are available for restroom facilities at the park. Please bring a filled water bottle.
  • The tour will be canceled and rescheduled if there is inclement weather and registered participants will be notified by email.

Accessibility

Dorothea Dix Park continues to work to be accessible and welcoming for visitors with disabilities and limited mobility. Accessible Parking with reserved spaces are available in all lots on campus. Handicap accessible port-a-johns are located at the Big Field and Flowers Field. Portions of Dorothea Dix Park, including some areas where programs and events occur, have uneven surfaces are not ADA accessible at this time.
