Explore Dix Park: Birdwatching

Learn about the resident and migrant birds of Dix Park and sharpen your bird identification skills as we practice birding by sight and by ear to prepare for spring migration.

Instructor: Deja Perkins, Naturally Wild

Get ready to learn tips for identifying sparrows, woodpeckers, hawks and more. Contribute to real science data as we monitor how the diversity of birds changes in the park from month to month. This program is free thanks to Dix Park Conservancy donors.

Time: 8:00 - 10:00 am

Location: Flower Cottage, 2105 Umstead Drive Raleigh, NC 27603

Tickets: Participation is limited to meet the current outdoor gathering limits. Registration is required. Registration opens one week in advance at 12:00 pm. 

REGISTRATION

Due to COVID-19, Birdwatching will look a bit different. New health and safety precautions have been put in place to ensure your safety and the safety of our guides and park staff. All COVID-19 related information is listed on the Eventbrite registration page.

Know Before You Go

  • Pack your binoculars and comfy shoes, and let’s go birding together! No Binoculars? No problem! There will be 15 pairs of sanitized binoculars available for use during the program (first come first served basis).
  • Walking up hills, in grass and on uneven surfaces will be necessary.
  • Participants will be required to wear a masks at all times.
  • Port-a-johns are available for restroom facilities at the park. Please bring a filled water bottle.

Accessibility

Dorothea Dix Park continues to work to be accessible and welcoming for visitors with disabilities and limited mobility. Accessible Parking with reserved spaces are available in all lots on campus. Handicap accessible port-a-johns are located at the Big Field and Flowers Field. Portions of Dorothea Dix Park, including some areas where programs and events occur, have uneven surfaces are not ADA accessible at this time.
