A Burden Too Great to Bear: Dorothea Dix Hospital and the Civil War

Dorothea Dix Hospital, formerly known as the North Carolina Insane Asylum, opened only five years before the start of the American Civil War. The bloody conflict left an indelible mark on the hospital for the next half century.
Join City of Raleigh (COR) Museum Director Ernest Dollar as he explores the occupation of the hospital grounds by Union soldiers in 1865 and the war’s legacy in those who sought treatment for the deep trauma it caused. Using letters, diaries and patient records, Dollar brings to life those who found the Civil War’s carnage a burden too great to bear.

Please bring a chair or a blanket to sit on. The program will be outside the entire time.

There are no bathrooms in Dix Park and no drinkable water, so please come prepared to only have port-a-johns available.

Directions to the Program Location:
Going southeast on Western Boulevard (toward downtown Raleigh), turn right onto S. Boylan Drive. Stay right to continue on Boylan Drive. Turn left onto Umstead Drive. The tree covered hill directly in front of you is Harvey Hill. Find parking at the top of the hill.
